History of the Internet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hIQjrMHTv4

Before 1957: Batch processing = computers only worked on one task at a time, manual programming, indirect connection to computers (had to be kept in cool environment)

1957: remote connection installed so developers could work directly on computers, time-sharing concept (share processing power of one computer with multiple users), first unmanned satellite sent into orbit by Soviet Union

1958: US founded DARPA, planned large scale computer network to help knowledge transfer = Arpanet (IMP subnet, developed network control protocol)

Rand Corp = military network

National Physical Laboratory = commercial network (to avoid, congestion packet switching was born)

Cyclades = scientific network (focus on comm. with other networks “internet”)–computers serve as a transfer node

  • To avoid breakdown during an attack, a decentralized network architecture had to be developed (comm was still through radio waves)
  • Distributed network model introduced
  • TCP IP protocol guaranteed compatibility b/w networks, merged and created internet
